Animal Waste In modern society, animals, such as chickens and cows, are genetically created for human consumption in concentrated animal feeding operations, otherwise known as CAFOs (Burkholder 2007). Animal feeding operations significantly contribute to water pollution because of the millions of pounds of manure produced. Controlled animal feeding operations hold hundreds of animals that must relieve themselves multiple times a day, causing an excessive buildup of manure. 238,000 working farms and ranches in the United States are animal feeding operations and produce 500 million tons of manure each year (U.S Environmental Protection Agency 2014).
